16 | STEVENS STUDENT HANDBOOK Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (“FERPA”) protects the privacy of a student’s education records and affords students certain rights to control access to their education records. Under FERPA, education records are defined as: records, files, documents and other materials that contain information directly related to a student and are maintained by Stevens or a third party acting on Stevens’ behalf. These education records include, but are not limited to, academic, financial and disciplinary records. Consistent with FERPA, student records may be disclosed without the consent of the student if the disclosure meets one of the statutory exemptions, or if the disclosure is directory information and the student has not placed a hold on the release of directory information. Please see Stevens’ Policy on Student Privacy Rights for a description of a student’s rights under FERPA and the university’s practices and procedures to protect those rights. Students have the right to grant permission for others to access their academic records, including allowing university officials to discuss those records with third parties. To authorize the release of your education records: • Log in to Workday. • Select the “Requests” application from your homepage. • Click “Create Request” and follow the prompts to complete your authorization.
